Lasers, which are very powerful, precise beams of light, can be used instead of blades (scalpels) for very careful surgical work, including treating some cancers.<\/span><\/p>\n

Surgery can be used to diagnose, treat, or even help prevent cancer in some cases. Most people with cancer will have some type of surgery. It often offers the greatest chance for cure, especially if the cancer has not spread to other parts of the body. Learn more about surgery here.<\/span><\/p>\n

There are many types of cancer treatment. The types of treatment that you have will depend on the type of cancer you have and how advanced it is. Some people with cancer will have only one treatment. But most people have a combination of treatments, such as s<\/span>urgery\u00a0<\/span>and\/or<\/span>\u00a0r<\/span>adiation therapy<\/span>. You may also have<\/span>\u00a0i<\/span>mmunotherapy<\/span>,t<\/span>argeted therapy<\/span>, or<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>hormone therapy<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Clinical trials might also be an option for you. Clinical trials are<\/span>\u00a0r<\/span>esearch studies<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>that involve people. Understanding what they are and how they work can help you decide if taking part in a trial is a good option for you.<\/span><\/p>\n

When you need treatment for cancer, you have a lot to learn and think about. It is normal to feel overwhelmed and confused. But, talking with your doctor and learning all you can about all your treatment options, including clinical trials, can help you make a decision you feel good about.<\/span><\/p>\n

Radiofrequency ablation uses heat made by radio waves to kill cancer cells. Radiofrequency is a type of electrical energy. Ablation means destroying completely. The electrical energy heats up the tumour and kills the cancer cells. You have RFA through a probe that goes through your skin into the tumour. RFA is quite a new treatment and at the moment only a few specialist centres can offer it.<\/span><\/p>\n

Researchers have found that RFA works best on small cancers, usually those smaller than 5cm across. But doctors sometimes use RFA to treat larger tumours. You can have RFA treatment several times<\/span><\/p>\n

High intensity focused ultrasound or HIFU is a type of cancer treatment. Doctors give the treatment using a machine that gives off high frequency sound waves. These waves deliver a strong beam to a specific part of a cancer. Some cells die when this high intensity ultrasound beam is focused directly onto them.<\/span><\/p>\n

Doctors have been interested in this type of treatment for nearly 50 years. But it is only in recent years that they have been seriously investigating its use in treating different types of cancer. One advantage of this type of treatment is that because it only uses sound waves to kill the cancer cells, it doesn\u2019t have as many side effects as other types of<\/span>\u00a0cancer<\/span>\u00a0treatments<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>already in use.<\/span><\/p>\n

There have been trials in the UK using HIFU for renal cell (kidney) cancer. In one trial patients had HIFU and a week or two later they had an operation to remove their cancer. The doctors looked at the cancer cells they removed to see what effect the HIFU had. The other trial was for patients with more advanced cancer that could not be removed with an operation. The aim of these trials was to find out how well HIFU works for kidney cancer, and what the side effects are. The results have not yet been made available.<\/span><\/p>\n

The cancer treatment options your doctor recommends depends on the type and stage of cancer, possible side effects, and the patient’s preferences and overall health. In cancer care, different types of doctors often work together to create a patient’s overall treatment plan that combines different types of treatments. This is called a\u00a0multidisciplinary<\/span>\u00a0team<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Some people with cancer will have only one treatment. But most people have a combination of treatments, such as surgery with chemotherapy and\/or radiation therapy. When you need treatment for cancer, you have a lot to learn and think about. It is normal to feel overwhelmed and confused. But, talking with your doctor and learning about the types of treatment you may have can help you feel more in control<\/span><\/p>\n

Alternative cancer treatments may not play a direct role in curing your cancer, but they may help you cope with signs and symptoms caused by cancer and cancer treatments. Common signs and symptoms such as anxiety, fatigue, nausea and vomiting, pain, difficulty sleeping, and stress may be lessened by alternative treatments.<\/span>
\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Integrating the best of evidence-based complementary and alternative cancer treatments with the treatments you receive from your doctor may help relieve many of the symptoms associated with cancer and its treatment. Discuss all of your options with your doctor and together you can determine which strategies might work for you and which are likely to have no benefit.<\/span><\/p>\n

Work closely with your doctor to determine the right balance between traditional medicines and alternative cancer treatments. While complementary and alternative cancer treatments, such as acupuncture, may reduce nausea or pain, they generally aren’t powerful enough to replace cancer medications from your doctor.<\/span><\/p>\n
