WOW First Organic Drive thru restaurant!
Amy's Kitchen, an organic Drive Thru?
Amy’s Kitchen wants to be more than just a frozen food company. In late June, it will launch its first drive-thru restaurant in Rohnert Park, Cal. to provide the same freshly prepared vegetarian foods the company is known for—but fast.
The European Union's official seal for organic foods features a red strawberry glistening in the sunlight, with a farm in the background. Anyone who buys yoghurt containing the label expects to getting a pot full of natural goodness.
But appearances can be deceptive. An organic strawberry yoghurt doesn't necessarily contain any fruit at all. A gap in the EU rules on organic food allows producers to use artificial aromas.
Many consumers have long had their doubts about how genuine supposedly organic products are. Now the European Commission has delivered proof. "In the long run, standards that are not trustworthy can jeopardize public confidence and lead to market failure," says the draft of a new EU directive seen by SPIEGEL.
Quick service and cheap prices won't mean fat-laden mystery meat when Amy's Drive Thru opens in July. The restaurant will offer meat-free burgers, burritos, macaroni and cheese, pizza, salad, and chili, as well as milkshakes and vegan non-dairy shakes. Each menu item can be ordered vegan or gluten-free, the company says, and every ingredient is non-GMO.
Julian Metcalfe, the company's co-founder who built up Pret from scratch to more than 100 branches said the deal was purely to help the firm expand abroad and would have no impact on the quality of the product. But there was intense speculation in the City that the deal spells the end of Pret in its present form, with McDonald's sure to gradually increase its stake with a view to an eventual buy-out.
This development is a win for vegetarians and animal lovers. The number of vegetarian diets in America has more than doubled in the past five years; 16 million people in the U.S. are now vegetarian or vegan. Amy's Drive Thru, which follows trailblazing meat-free fast food outlets like Evolution in San Diego, is part of a vegetarian trend on the rise. Vegetarian and vegan options are increasingly appearing on restaurant menus and more Americans are including meat-free meals in their diets than ever before.
