Suzanne, who famously starred in the 1977 TV sitcom Three’s Company, has been taking a break from the entertainment world – instead finding ways to motivate women to realize their best selves through healthy living and active awareness of common medical issues. The mother-of-one learned the hard way how important it is to maintain her well-being after she was diagnosed with stage two breast cancer in 2001.
‘I thought I had taken care of myself. I never thought this would happen to me,’ she shared. ‘The irony is that I was in great shape at the time. Physically, I was in top form.’ During the height of her acting career, she was one of the most sought after television stars and worked non-stop. She told the publication, ‘I had never thought about my dietary choices relative to my health,’ and added she often visited the craft services table indulging on junk foods. ‘I had to do some deep soul-searching. I realized I wasn’t taking sleep seriously, staying up late to write my books.’
Getting cancer was the ‘beginning of a new life for me,’ she said. And with her husband Alan Hamel, 78, and only child, Bruce, 49, by her side, Suzanne underwent a lumpectomy and radiation treatment. ‘Serious illness has a way of bringing the big love in your life closer,’ she confided. ‘They both backed me up 100 percent, which helped in my healing.’ After her surgery, she was very vocal in her decision to forego chemotherapy and decision to use alternative treatments for her recovery plan. On refusing chemo she said: ‘It has been a failure for so many. I was not going to take [it] and poison my body. For me, it was the best choice I could have made.’ Instead, she used Iscador, a modern method of using mistletoe to increase the strength of the immune system.
‘Over the 10 years I injected it daily, I never had a cold or flu or even a day where I didn’t feel up to par,’ she said.
‘I realized how important it was to work at a healthy immune system.’ Suzanne also switched to an overall healthier lifestyle in her bid to beat the disease. ‘I started growing my own organic vegetables… and started a routine of generally going to bed at 9.30 to 10 o’clock every night and sleeping until 7 am. I take perfect care of my machine.’
Her fitness routine is also scheduled out: ‘I do yoga three times a week and I walk for a half hour every day. ‘In between, I get on the elliptical and my triple thigh trainer – I really do use the Thighmaster! – and do about 20 minutes on each of those. I also walk up and down the stairs a lot.’ Her newest project: The best-selling author released her newest book, I’m Too Young For This!

So with her new lease of life, Suzanne is dreaming up her next plans for success. ‘I would like to do my own daily talk show,’ she revealed. ‘Wisdom is the gift of ageing; no young person can have or buy it.’ ‘My success was and is self-evident. I’m alive. I’ve lived. I’ve thrived and have grown as a person. I’m now healthier than ever. Who can argue with that?’
