A person may have just one of these treatments, but often a combination of several treatments is the best defense against recurrence. When used in combination, these different treatment options offer powerful tools for helping the body fight off cancer. For example, doctors may use radiation to shrink the size of a tumor before surgery, or they may prescribe radiation to kill any cancer cells that remain following surgery or chemotherapy.
Board-certified surgeons perform surgeries related to cancer treatment at Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center and Asante Three Rivers Medical Center.

When Surgery is part of your treatment plan
Every cancer patient has an individualized treatment plan. If surgery is part of your treatment, you can rest assured that we provide the best care possible—before, during, and after surgery.
Every cancer surgery is different, depending on the size and the location of the tumor. In most cases, the goal of surgery is to remove as much of the cancerous tissue as possible. Your surgery may be performed as either an inpatient or an outpatient procedure. At Asante we work in collaboration with general surgeons who specialize in many different types of cancer-based surgeries.
We have two comfortable and convenient locations for patients who need different types of infusion therapy, including chemotherapy.

Chemotherapy
Many patients receive some type of chemotherapy as part of their treatment plan. During chemotherapy, drugs are administered to destroy cancer cells. Often these drugs are delivered directly to the vein through an intravenous (IV) needle.
Chemotherapy may be provided in the hospital, at home, or at one of our outpatient infusion centers in Medford or Grants Pass. You’ll receive treatment from registered nurses who are specially trained and certified in oncology. The nurse monitors your treatment closely and educates you and your family about what to expect during and after chemotherapy.
In Medford patients receive outpatient chemotherapy treatments in the Dubs cancer building on the Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center campus. Grants Pass patients receive treatments at Spears Cancer Center on the Asante Three Rivers Medical Center campus. Find a location

Radiation Therapy: A Closer Look
Radiation therapy is a common type of cancer treatment that may be used alone or in combination with surgery, chemotherapy, or other medical therapies. Almost everyone is familiar with X-rays, which use low doses of radiation to create a picture of your teeth or bones. When used for cancer treatment (a much higher but more-focused dose), the goal of radiation is to kill or slow the growth of cancer cells without exposing the body’s healthy tissues to radiation.
At Asante we’ve invested in state-of-the-art radiation technology so that we can offer treatment tailored to your specific needs. At your first appointment, the radiation oncologist discusses the best type of radiation therapy for you. All cancers are different, and all of our treatments are highly customized to deliver the most-effective therapy possible.
TomoTherapy® Offers The Latest Technology in Radiation Therapy.
The TomoTherapy Hi-Art treatment system is one of the leading innovations in the field of radiation therapy. Asante invested in the TomoTherapy machine because it vastly improves our ability to personalize radiation treatments on a daily basis, maximizing the effectiveness of the treatment while minimizing the damage to healthy tissue. TomoTherapy is particularly effective for cancers that are difficult to treat with conventional radiation therapy because of their size or location.

Keep in mind that radiation therapy is always tailored to the particular needs of the patient. Although TomoTherapy is innovative, it may not necessarily be the best option for you. The radiation oncologist will always choose the type of therapy that’s best for your situation.

Expertise in Gynecological Care
Asante has formed an important partnership with Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) to provide our area with advanced care for gynecological cancer (cancers of the female reproductive organs). Through this collaboration, women will have local access to the services of a gynecologic oncologist skilled in performing the most complex treatments.
Dr. Tanja Pejovic has advanced training in treating all gynecological cancers. She completed her residency and fellowship at the Yale University School of Medicine before becoming division chief of gynecologic oncology at OHSU.

Dr. Pejovic’s research interest in how ovarian cancer develops in the body’s cells has given her a deep understanding of this disease. While she continues to work with doctors and scientists on applying the latest scientific discoveries to patient care, Dr. Pejovic is also interested in holistic approaches to cancer care and is pursuing formal training in cancer, aging, and self-healing abilities.  Dr. Pejovic’s clinic is located in the Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center Radiation Oncology Department.
