NEW YORK – The New York City Department of Health is investigating a deadly outbreak of Legionnaire’s disease in the South Bronx, CBS New York reports. Legionnaire’s disease is a pneumonia caused by the bacterium Legionella rmeumophila. The organism, which normally dwells in pond water, was given its popular name after being identified as the cause of an outbreak of a mysterious, highly virulent pulmonary infection among 200 people attending a 1976 American Legion convention in Philadelphia.
Legionnaires’ disease is a severe form of pneumonia caused by a bacterium known as legionella. Common symptoms include high fever, chills, body pain, cough, hemoptysis, breathlessness, chest pain, fatigue, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, confusion and other mental illnesses.
