VIDEO: Does Dense breast tissue increase risk of cancer?

Women who have dense breasts likely need additional screening outside a traditional mammography to ensure they do not have breast cancer. But doctors are not required to inform women that they have dense breasts uniformly across the nation. Right now, twenty-one states require doctors to provide this vital, life-saving information, with Michigan the latest newcomer.

Watch the video to hear how one Michigan woman’s fight against breast cancer led her to advocate for a change in her state’s healthcare laws.

Support for Young Women with Breast Cancer

Younger women diagnosed with breast cancer have unique needs compared to older women. In addition to having the tendency of a more aggressive disease, many are also faced with issues such as infertility, early menopause, body image, developing careers, raising young families and more. Unfortunately, support for breast cancer is often focused on older women because their numbers are greater. There are not many resources available for women diagnosed with breast cancer under the age of 45.

SurviveDAT is a support program for young women with breast cancer, their families, and caregivers. It provides ongoing support in the form of online, local resources, information, encouragement, as well as face-to-face, professionally led support groups and workshops on topics such as nutrition, fertility and more. Support groups have been shown to help reduce stress among the attendees by showing the women that they are not alone in the fight against cancer. Those who use this support system usually feel better about themselves, their future, and have a better quality of life.

With your help, a young breast cancer patient will get the support she needs.

The focus of SurviveDAT is to raise awareness of the unique needs and issues facing young women diagnosed with breast cancer under age 45, and reduce their stress by providing support to meet those needs, and thus increase their quality of life and promote healing.
