Minnesota Dentist came to quickly realize what he had done after killing a lion that was treasured by locals

According to the Zimbabwe Conservation task force, during the nighttime hunt, the Zimbabwean men tied a dead animal to their car to draw the lion out of a national park.

Using bait to lure the lion is deemed unethical by the Safari Operators Association of Zimbabwe, of which Bronkhorst is a member. The association has since revoked his license.

Cecil was being studied by an Oxford University research program. This Lion was protected in a National Park but the dentist paid $50,000 to lure him out of the park, and illegally killed him

Palmer, 55, wrote about the situation in a note to his patients. “I understand and respect that not everyone shares the same views on hunting,” he wrote in the letter, which added that he would “resume normal operations as soon as possible.”

Social media were filled with condemnation of the killing and on Twitter, the hashtag cecilthelion was in wide use.

Muchinguri said Palmer slipped away before government officials realized what had happened to the country’s most famous lion.

“It was too late to apprehend the foreign poacher because he had already absconded to his country of origin,” Muchinguri said, according to Reuters.

Palmer, a dentist in Minnesota, has fallen off the radar since Tuesday, when reports first surfaced identifying him as the hunter of Cecil the lion, a celebrity in Zimbabwe. In one of his only public statements, Palmer said Tuesday “I deeply regret” killing “a known, local favorite” and that he relied on local guides. He said he was led to believe the hunt was legal.
